The following can be read in full at Wellmont.org:
Dr. Jett is one of only about 10,000 physiatrists in the country. The field, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation, addresses multiple medical needs, such as spine rehabilitation, non-operative spine and orthopedic care and musculoskeletal health.
"A big part of our care involves the spine," Dr. Jett said. "We attempt to isolate the pain generator causing the problem in someone's back - sometimes it's more than one - and treat it through a non-operative approach as much as possible."
Other elements of care available from a physiatrist are nerve conduction studies and interventional spinal procedures, such as epidural steroid injections. Dr. Jett said he can also work with speech, occupational and physical therapists to assist stroke and other neurological patients.
Dr. Jett said pain management from a rehabilitation approach is focused on wellness. So he encourages his patients to eat well, obtain an appropriate amount of sleep and not smoke. Dr. Jett's decision to become a physician can be traced in many ways to his parents' careers as a social worker and teacher. Through their choices, he learned the value of helping people and knew that would play a role in deciding what type of work he would choose.
He said he enjoys taking care of care of patients, learning more about them and educating them about their health.
"I want my patients to know I'm here for them and will do what I can to help them," Dr. Jett said. "I consider myself as much of a coach as a physician. I will offer solutions but also set realistic expectations based on where the patient is in the disease process. I also encourage my patients to become involved in their own care because that will help them."
